Completed PhD titled: Nanostructured architectures of silicon and germanium as high capacity, long cycle life lithium-ion batteries also at the University of Limerick (2018) under the supervision of Prof. Kevin M. Ryan and was funded by the IRC Government of Ireland Scholarship Award. Currently a Postdoctoral researcher within the group.

Dr Vivek Verma

Brief Bio (CV) (previous institutions): Vivek Verma completed his PhD from Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) at the University of Limerick, Ireland under the supervision of Prof. Kieran Hodnett, Dr. Sarah Hudson and Dr. Peter Davern, in October 2018. During his Phd, Vivek studied the role of hydrogen bonding in heterogeneous nucleation of active ingredients in the presence of excipients. He obtained his Int. BS-MS degree in 2014 from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India.

Dr Sheida Ishkli

Marie Curie Fellow

Research interests: Electrochemical energy storage, lithium ion batteries, polymer electrolytes

Brief Bio:

Sheida is a Marie-Curie Career-FIT postdoctoral researcher in the Nanotechnology group. She completed her Ph.D. studies in Madrid Institute of Advanced Studies (IMDEA Energy) in 2013 with her thesis titled “Quinone-based organic redox compounds for electrochemical energy storage”.

She was hired by Solvay in 2013 upon finishing her Ph.D. as a R&D Scientist and Electrochemist at Solvay SA. Research and Innovation Centre in Brussels, Belgium. She worked as an experienced Marie-Curie scientist for the Energy Caps Project (EU Project: FP7-People Marie Curie Actions, Industry Academia Partnerships and Pathways) which aimed at the development of sustainable and safe lithium ion capacitors. She continued with her research career in Solvay with some other projects including gel polymer electrolytes for lithium metal batteries, hybrid cathodes for high power lithium ion batteries, silicon/carbon composite anodes for advanced lithium ion batteries and electrodialysis.

Her recent research interests focus on advanced lithium ion batteries and high performance polymer electrolytes.







Dr Ibrahim Aminu

I S Aminu received his BSc Materials Engineering from KNUST, Ghana (2008), and MSc/PhD degree in New Energy Materials and Devices from WHUT, China (2014/2017) where he focused on novel synthesis mechanisms of multifunctional nanomaterials for application in electrochemical water splitting/PEM fuel cells (HER/OER/ORR) and energy storage batteries (Zn-air and Li-ion batteries). He is currently working under Prof. K. M. Ryan, since June 2018, on a SFI funded project (Copper silicide nanostructures and Si-nanowires for Li-ion batteries) and Marie Curie Fellowship (Novel graphitic cathodes for Al-ion batteries). He has >50 peer reviewed publications and one book chapter (>1500 citations, H-index: 23).

Dr Uma Ghorpade

Brief Bio (CV) (previous institutions): Uma Ghorpade obtained her M.Sc. Degree (Inorganic Chemistry) from Shivaji University, India (2012). She has completed her Ph. D. in Chemistry at same University under the supervision of Prof. S. S. Kolekar and Prof. Jin Hyeok Kim (Chonnam National University, S. Korea) in 2017. Currently she is working under Prof. K. M. Ryan on a SFI funded project termed Complex group (IV) derived Nanocrystals: Composition, Shape and Heterostructure Control via Solution Methods. Her research interests include nanoparticles and materials synthesis including visible light responsive binary, ternary and quaternary semiconductor compounds as well as wide-band gap metal oxides for energy-related applications by using less toxic, earth abundant elements.

Dr Laurent Perge

Current Role: Postdoctoral researcher joint with Dr Luis PADRELA on continuous manufacturing of drug nanoparticles (CM-NANO)

Research interests: Continuous manufacturing of drug delivery systems, powder flow characterisation, pharmaceutical nanocrystals, Continuous processes involving supercritical fluid

Brief bio: Laurent completed his PhD in 2011 from the Charles Gerhardt Institute of Montpellier, France. During his PhD, he worked on the development, characterisation and evaluation of composite solid lipid microparticles for the controlled release of active pharmaceutical ingredient in the stomach. Following his PhD, Rescoll hired him in 2012 as a R&D scientist at their laboratories in Bordeaux, France. He worked as an experienced scientist on the FP7 European project AnastomoSEAL, which aimed to develop biodegradable and biocompatible adhesive membrane to enhance the recovery of the intestine following anastomosis due to cancer treatment. Alongside this main project, he worked as junior project manager on several industrial contract research projects, including composites for aerospace, luxury items and medical devices development. He continued with a sabbatical leave of 2 years to travel the world before joining the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre in the University of Limerick as a Post-doctoral Researcher on the flowability of drug powder in industrial settings. He joined the nanoresearch group @ UL in 2018 to work on the development of process for the continuous manufacturing of drug nanoparticles, project funded by Enterprise Ireland. His recent professional interests focus on the technical and business development of technologies for the production of nano drug delivery systems.

Brief Bio:

Fiona received a B.Sc. in Energy from the Department of Physics in the University of Limerick (2016).  Upon completing her degree, Fiona interned as a research assistant in Nanotechnology group at the Bernal institute for 6 months. She was then awarded an IRC Enterprise Partnership Scholarship with Intel Ireland enabling the beginning of her PhD journey under the supervision of Prof Kevin Ryan in January 2017. Her current research focus is the colloidal synthesis, characterisation and assembly of perovskite nanomaterials for next generation optoelectronic devices.

His current research focuses on the synthesis of semiconducting nanowires and optimizing their performance in single nanowire devices.

Seamus Kilian

Phd Student (SFI Funded)

Research Interests: Nanomaterials for Li-ion Batteries, Si Nanowire Synthesis, Battery Testing, Nanomaterial Characterization.



Seamus graduated from UCD in 2016 with a BSc in Experimental Physics. He completed a master’s degree in Nanotechnology at UCD in 2017 with his thesis titled “Inducing IR photon up-conversion via SPP excitation for the enhancement of solar-cell efficiencies”. Upon completing his master’s degree, Seamus joined the Nanotechnology group at the Bernal institute as a PhD student in October 2017 under the supervision of Prof Kevin Ryan. His area of research focuses on developing low-cost and scalable routes to producing silicon nanowires for Li-ion battery applications.



Kieran McCarthy

Brief Bio: Kieran received his BSc. in Chemistry and Physical Education from the University of Limerick in 2017. He began his PhD in January 2018, under the supervision of Prof. Kevin M. Ryan and Dr. Tadhg Kennedy, after he was awarded an IRC Enterprise Partnership Scholarship with Analog Devices International (ADI). His research focuses on SMART estimation and sensing of Li-ion battery state parameters and use of silicon and germanium nanowires as novel anode materials for increased power density and improved fast-charging of LiBs.

Sumair Imtiaz

Brief Bio (CV): Sumair Imtiaz was born in Gujrat, Pakistan and graduated from University of Gujrat receiving a First Class Honors degree in Chemical Engineering.  He was then awarded with Chinese Government Scholarship which allowed him to join University of Jinan in China for his Master’s degree. Since December 2018, he has been working at the Nanotechnology group as a PhD researcher, having received funding from the SFI and MaREI. His research focuses on synthesis of high loading Si and Ge nanowires for Li-ion and Beyond Li-ion Batteries.

Gearoid Collins

Research Interests: Renewable energy, energy storage, lithium-ion batteries, bottom-up synthesis, synthesis and applications of silicon and germanium nanostructures for use in LiB and FETs

Brief Bio Gearóid received his undergraduate degree form Trinity College Dublin, graduating with a first clas honours in Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials (N-PCAM) in 2017. He began his PhD in the University of Limerick in January 2018, after being awarded a IRC Enterprise Partnership scholarship, in conjunction with Intel Ireland. His PhD work focuses on bottom-up synthetic protocols to develop high capacity silicon and germanium nanowire-based LiBs that can adequately function over a wide temperature range. Moreover, he is working on increasing the active mass loading of silicon nanowire anodes through intermediary CuSi nanowire growth. Further work includes in-situ phosphorus doping of silicon and germanium nanowires through vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) growth.

Brief Bio (CV): Received BSc. in Pharmaceutical and Industrial Chemistry from University of Limerick (2016).Barry is currently supervised by Prof. Kevin Ryan and Dr. Luis Padrela. Barry is currently studying supercritical fluid technology for the generation of nanoparticles of active pharmaceutical ingredients. His research focuses on the polymorphic control of API material using this technology in both batch and continuous operations.

Nilotpal Kapuria

Brief Bio: Nilotpal (friends call him Nil) obtained integrated masters (BS-MS) majoring in chemistry from IISER Bhopal in May’ 2018. His master’s research work was focused on exploiting self-assembly of organic chromophores to synthesize nanoparticles. Currently, he is a doctoral student in the Nanoresearch group at UL. Synthesis of anisotropic colloidal nanocrystals, characterization, and their assembly interest him.

Apart from research, he likes to fascinate himself with charcoal, watercolor,  and acrylic based abstracts and portraits. Other interests include food, movie, cricket, and traveling.

She started her professional journey as a Researcher for a Project of collaboration between Department of Atomic Energy of India and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) India. Maria Zubair completed master degree from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad Pakistan in 2017 with thesis entitled as synthesis, characterization and effect of addition of titania particles on the properties of epoxy amine matrix. She also work as a research assistant on project (Synthesis and characterization of photonics material) funded by higher education commission of Pakistan (HEC) from 2017-2019. Michela Ottaviani

Brief Bio: Master Degree in Physics at the Department of Physics “Sapienza” University of Rome, project  under the supervision of Prof.Antonio Polimeni on “ Analysis of the luminescence polarization emitted by GaAsSb/GaAs nanowires. Phd project is a joint project between “Sapienza” University of Rome and ENEA Research Center (Italian National Agency for New Technologies Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), under the supervision of Prof.Mauro Pasquali of SBAI Dept.“Sapienza” University of Rome. The project is focused on the synthesis Cu-catalyzed of silicon nanowires by CVD technique and on the electrochemical characterization. Now at Bernal Institute, under the supervision of Prof.Kevin M.Ryan,  the study is focused on the investigation of SEI formation by XPS and TEM analysis during the aging process and on the role of FEC additive.
